Top things to do before your child begins piano lessons

There are certain things you need to prepare well before your child begins his piano lessons. You would want to complete the checklist to make sure you are fully prepared for your child’s piano lessons in Singapore, at Ossia.

1. Buy a piano
The importance of having a piano at home cannot be stressed upon more. Your child would not get enough practice and thus, progress will be slow if there is not piano at home to practice on.
You could buy an acoustic piano or a digital piano. If having an acoustic piano is not possible, a digital piano does the job pretty well. Either ways, your child can devote their time in practicing and learning.

2. Put the piano in a suitable place
There are several reasons why a child would easily feel bored or sad while playing the piano at home. If you have placed your piano in a corner where nobody comes or sits, your child would begin to feel lonely. This also gives the impression that the piano is not important or useful. Another reason could be that you have placed the piano where the TV is. Now, when everybody is huddled around the TV neglecting the piano, your child would not want to play it. Make sure you avoid both these spaces when deciding on where to place the piano.

3. Keep your piano tuned.
Having an out of tune piano might make your kid not want to play it. If you have an acoustic piano at home, always see to it that it is properly tuned.

4. Bring home the piano months, or years before your child begins the lessons
Having the piano around before the children have even begun their lessons make them see it as a normal, everyday thing. They will get used to it and this will also give them time to explore it and make their own tunes while playing with it. So, when they finally begin their lessons, they will be familiar with it.

5. Do not stop your child from playing around with the piano
You cannot bring harm to a piano by pressing the keys, right? So why stop your child from playing around and making merry by playing music that brings him or her joy? Also, they will start getting familiarized with the workings of the keyboard and know where the blacks and whites are and how are they placed. They would also get familiar with the high notes and the soft notes. When your child begins the classes, he/she will already be familiar with the workings of the keys.

6. Instead of a makeshift chair, get a proper piano chair or stool for your child
When playing piano, sitting at the right height is extremely important. The right height can make the process of creating music comfortable and relaxing and will help your child make beautiful and pleasing music. Whereas sitting at the wrong height will make them uncomfortable and they will not be able to make good music.

7. Make them know their Alphabets from A to G – both forward and backward.
Knowing their alphabets both forward and backward will save your child a lot of time in their lessons and will also inculcate a sense of confidence when they begin their lesson.

8. Make your child know the difference between left and right
Knowing how to do things with left and right is fundamental in laying the building blocks of fluency while playing piano. Before they begin their lessons, see if your child can make some action on one side and then mirror the same on their other side.

These are some of the things you need to prepare for before your child begins lessons. Complete the checklist and both you and your child will be ready before either of you know it.
